On September 24, 2020, a supremacy battle between rival cult groups, the Eiye Confraternity and the Aye Confraternity, left one person dead and many injured outside Soulmate Hotel and Suite, Ojokoro LCDA.
Situated at Osho street, off Jonathan Coker Rd, Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos, the hotel has shattered the peace of the once-quiet area as fights break out regularly from its customers.
Most of these fights, according to residents of the area, are caused by notorious cult members who track rival members to the venue to settle scores.”
This has left many residents of the area helpless as their calls for government intervention have failed.
Now, the hotel is ready to rebrand and relaunch, for the umpteenth time and residents are jittery.
IfakoIjaiyeNews went to Osho and spoke with some residents about how they feel as Soulmate hotel is about to come to life again.
An Atmosphere Of Fear Returns
A resident of Bamgboye Street, who spoke to our reporter on condition of anonymity said residents of the area are now jittery as the management of the hotel has concluded plans to restart business.
She said, “Everybody is living in fear because the cult boys will be back and we will no longer have peace. Every night, Osho is always like a market. The bad boys will be many outside while smoking Indian hemp (cannabis). I have lost count of the number of times fights broke out in this area because of Soulmate hotel.”
A resident of Osho Street, Mr Adams (not real name) said all efforts by the community to find a lasting solution to the menace posed by Soulmate Hotel has proved abortive.
“The landlords have met many times, and written many petitions to Oko-Oba police station but nothing happened. We have met with the owner many times but it is always a dead end. At a time, we had to stay back because words got out that the landlords are the ones chasing the cultists away and we didn’t want to be made scapegoats,” he said.
A Battlefield For Cultists
Other residents who spoke with IfakoIjaiyeNews disclosed that on many occasions, they have fallen victim to sudden attacks by cultists due to the presence of Soulmate Hotel and Suite.
Narrating an event that shook the community, a youth within the area who identified himself as Tade, said sometime last year, they were outside in the evening when suddenly, they heard gunshots and everybody ran for safety.
He said, “Sometime last year, we were all outside when we heard gunshots and we saw some people numbering over 7 coming down from Abiodun street. We all ran for our lives. We later found out they were Eiye boys who come looking for one Aiye cult member.
“They didn’t see him but when returning, they matcheted some people, forcefully collected their phones and a young lady was grazed by one of the bullets. She was lucky because it was her arm that was affected.”
IfakoIjaiyeNews tried to track down the lady that was allegedly hit but we couldn’t locate her.
A Return Of Yahoo Boys And Drugs
Residents fear that once the hotel returns to functioning, so will Yahoo Boys (internet fraudsters) and drug peddlers who have deserted the area return.
Tade said that residents have braced up for a return of drug peddlers who hang around every corner to sell “weed, Arizona, loud and other banned substances to people”.
“The Yahoo boys will return with their different cars and we will have to stay awake all night out of fear of what might happen,” he added.
IfakoIjaiyeNews reached out to Soulmate Hotel and Suite via a number on its website but it wasn’t going through. Our reporter also visited the hotel but the security personnel denied her access.
