Police Officer Shoots “Mistress” To Death, Kills Self

Police in Kwara are investigating a homicide in which a police officer shot a woman to death at a school premises on Thursday in Ilorin.

The police officer also shot himself to death after the murder.

The murdered woman was believed to be mistress of the police officer.

An eyewitness said that upon arrival at the school with her child, the police officer accosted the murdered woman, had some discussions with her before shooting her twice.

He added that the police officer immediately shot himself to death also.

Another eye-witness who saw the incident from a nearby building confirmed the report.

A man, claiming to be a property owner said the police officer and the woman hired an apartment from him some weeks back and had been behaving like love birds until they started having problems since five days earlier.

“They have been having issues since five days ago. When they rented the house, we were always happy with the way they showed love to each other.

“Some say the police officer was a man friend of the woman, but they had been quarrelling for the past few days now,’’ the man said.

Police spokesman in Kwara, SP Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed that a police officer killed a woman and himself on Thursday in Ilorin.

He told NAN that while details were still sketchy, he was told that it was a case of love affair gone sour.

Okasanmi said the police had begun investigation into the matter.  (NAN)

Court Remands Man For Alleged N1m Fraud

An Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun, on Friday, remanded a 42-year-old man, Adegbile Musibau, for alleged N1 million fraud.

The defendant, whose house address was not given, is facing a two-count charge of fraud and stealing.

The Prosecutor, ASP Emmanuel Abdullahi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometime in August 2022 at Ita-Olopo Street, Ile-Ife.

Abdullahi said that the defendant allegedly fraudulently obtained an FCMB ATM card and a phone belonging to one Bimbo Awoyera, with which he withdrew the sum of N1,030,000 from her bank account.

He said the offence contravened sections 390(9) and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2002.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge.

The defence Counsel, Mr K. A. Akintilo, applied for the bail for the defendant in the most liberal term, with a promise that his client would not jump bail.

Magistrate Kike Adebayo, however, ordered the defendant to be remanded at the Ile-Ife Correctional Centre, and asked the defence counsel to put in a formal bail before the court.

Adebayo adjourned the case to June 9, for hearing. (NAN)

Court Remands 27-year-old For Attempted Murder

An Abakaliki Chief Magistrates Court on Monday remanded one Chigozie Nwachukwu at a correctional centre in Ebonyi, allegedly for attempted murder and belonging to a cult group.

Nwachukwu, 27, a suspected member of Barger Confraternity, is facing a three-count charge which bordered on conspiracy, cultism and attempted murder.

The Police Prosecutor, Insp. Bassey Okon told the court that the accused committed the offences on Nov. 24, 2022, at Amachi-Unuhu, Abakaliki Local Government Area of the state.

Okon told the court that Nwachukwu and one other, now at large, attempted to murder one Nwachukwu Lawrence, by pushing him into a soak-away pit.

Okon said the offence was punishable under Section 516A (a) of the Criminal Code Cap 33 vol. 1, laws of Ebonyi, 2009.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Ojemba Isu-Oko, ordered that the accused be remanded at a correctional centre.

He adjourned the matter until June 23 for hearing.

Nwachukwu has yet to engage a counsel. (NAN)

Lagos Debunks Alleged Ongoing Graduate Internship Programme

Lagos State Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment has distanced itself from the viral social media posts about an ongoing internship programme under its Graduate Internship Programme.

A statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Ministry of Wealth Creation, Mr. Babatunde Adele and made available to IfakoIjaiyeNews said the viral social media post imploring unemployed youths with NYSC Certificates and LASRRA Number to register for the ongoing Lagos State Internship programme on: gipplasg.lagosstate.gov.ng did not originate from the Ministry.

According to him, “Although the Ministry has been in charge of the Graduate Internship Programme over the years. It is, however, necessary to clarify that the commencement date for the 2023 edition of the programme is yet to be made public”.

“Members of the public are therefore advised to disregard the fake social media message on the Graduate Internship Programme in Lagos State and desist from re-sharing the same message on different social media platforms”, the Director disclosed.

Adele reiterated that the Ministry will make an official public announcement as soon as the 2023 edition of the Programme is approved using the various social media platforms of the State Government and other communication platforms.

He warned the general public to always verify the sources of their information before circulating same on the social media to avoid creating unnecessary panic among interested candidates as well as the citizens.
