Oba Azeez Asiwaju, Onikotun of Ikotun in Lagos State has urged the Nigerian Police Force to intensify efforts in ensuring heavy security presence in the community for protection of residents.
Asiwaju made the call at a townhall meeting organised in Alimosho Constituency II, held at Eternal event centre, Egbe road, Lagos.
The theme of the programme was “2023 General Elections: The Imperatives of Permanent Voters’ Card”.
The traditional ruler said the activities of commercial motorcyclists (okada riders) within the community allegedly going about with different kinds of dangerous weapons had become worrisome.
He said the riders threatened to use the weapons on any of their customers who tried to argue with them based on disagreement on transportation fare, adding that he witnessed some of such incidences in recent times.
He commended efforts of the state government, local government and leadership of Alimosho constituency II on the development of his community.
” I am appealing to police officers within our community to intensify efforts in ensuring that lives and people’s property are safe within the community.
” Also to give critical look at the activities of the okada riders who go about with dangerous weapons, hidden within their motorcycles.
” These people must be checked and I want to appreciate our representative in the state House of Assembly, Mr Joseph Kehinde for his commitment to the development of Ikotun community,” he said.
Also, Oba Nojeemdeen Oduala, Alakesan of Akesan kingdom in Lagos urged the Lagos state government to site a police station within his community to curb crime rate.
Oduala said this was important to ensure hoodlums did not use the community as hideout to perpetrate evil.
He urged the Alimosho constituency members present for the meeting to ensure they got their PVCs to guide against being disenfranchised to vote for their leaders at the 2023 elections.
The Elegbe of Egbe kingdom, Oba Ashimiyu Olorunfemi, urged Kehinde to intensify efforts in developing the constituency
He commended Kehinde’s effort, adding that more could be done for the constituency in terms of road rehabilitation, creation of schools, empowerment programmes and more.
The traditional ruler appealed to the constituents to ensure their voter’s cards were put to use by coming out to vote during the forthcoming elections.
He said he had stopped attending to his community members without their PVCs.
” I must commend Kehinde for his efforts so far in developing the communities within his constituency but we want you to do more.
” I appeal to you all to come out and vote for your choice, get your PVC and vote, I have stopped attending to people in my community who do not have their PVC, this is important for our growth as a nation,” he said.
ASP Bayo Sulaimon, Area F police command promised to address the security challenges within those communities.
Sulaimon educated the people on the need to work with the police to curb excesses of hoodlums in the communities.
” Am here to serve you but I want your partnership as well, work with your DPO and community development associations and we will all achieve our goals,” he said.
Earlier, Kehinde encouraged the people to ensure they became eligible to exercise their civic responsibility to vote their conscience by acquiring their PVCs.
He said it was worrisome that over 20 million PVCs were still not collected across the nation, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and 1million were from Lagos state.
According to him, this do not augur well for the progress and development of the state and the nation at large, as this may create opportunities for incompetent persons to be elected as leaders.
” I urge you all to get your PVCs and vote when the time comes, this is a very important civic duty in ensuring the sustainance of a transformative government and enduring democracy in the state and nation,” he said.
